Description
Bi-Metal Strip Use.
When heated, the brass, of greater expansivity, expands more than the steel. The two materials cannot move apart, so the bimetallic strip curves, with the brass on the outside of the curve.
Should liquid nitrogen be available, the bending of the bimetallic strip in the opposite direction will be observed.
It is safe to hold the bimetallic strip above and away from the flame of a bunsen burner. A swift reaction will take place, which will not damage the product. Intense heat will however cause a permanent distortion.
The bimetallic strip is a useful teaching aide in Science, and is found in applications such as non liquid thermometers, thermostats, and a heating coil in car indicator circuits.
